Ghostbusters: The Video Game - Review

    by Dakota Grabowski

Civilians of Earth can breathe a sigh of relief – they now can call on the Ghostbusters whenever there’s something strange in their neighborhood. Back in the ‘80’s, it was a sure thing to call on the ever reliable Ghostbusters when a ghoul or banshee came a knocking at their door. But ever since the franchise faded from the limelight, fans have been begging for the brainchildren behind the project (Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd) to resurrect the highly regarded foursome who can capture any ghost in the world. So without further ado, let’s take a voyage through Ramis and Aykroyd’s next step in the franchise with Ghostbusters: The Video Game. It has to be said because everyone’s dying to find out: if you’re a fan of the series, you’ll absolutely love the video game. Capturing the essence of what it’s like to be a Ghostbuster, the video game has the right presentation and production values to keep everyone interested until they finish the single-player campaign.

Focusing on keeping it as authentic as they could, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Harold Ramis, and Dan Aykroyd have lent their voices for their characters. In addition, Brian Doyle-Murray (the bumbling idiot of a mayor), Annie Potts (Secretary Janine), Max von Sydow (taking over as Vigo the Carpathian) and Alyssa Milano (Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn) have joined the star-studded voice cast. Outside of the top-notch voice casting, the game is flat out hilarious. There’s humor around every corner and, not to mention, ghosts ready to spook the willy-nilly out of everyone. Ghostbusters: The Video Game is a third-person action- adventure title that is appropriate for all age ranges. It’ll make you giggle, the action isn’t over-the-top violent and the controls are fairly simple to learn. It’s all lighthearted fun and there shouldn’t be any problem for fans or newcomers finding the game accessible.

Playing as an unnamed rookie – who, by the way, has a name tag that read “Rookie” – players will battle their way through hotels, cemeteries, libraries, basements and much more as they capture any ghost that’s on the loose. Having the original four Ghostbusters at your side, the game is as entertaining as anyone could’ve ever imagined. Fighting against Slimer, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and other alike ghastly apparitions from the films, there’s never a dull moment throughout Ghostbusters’ single-player campaign. Players will use their proton pack to vanquish enemies left and right while all the while listening to the humor from the four brilliant comedians who reprise their characters. With several modes – such as the basic stream to a shotgun style – available for your proton pack, players are able to mix and match different gameplay styles to combat your enemies who are tougher than they look to capture and pull into ghost traps.
