Each and every Transformer has it’s own unique special ability, consisting of an ultra-powerful move that must charge up and can only be used after a waiting period expires. These special attacks range from one hit kills, to defensive shields, turrets, and even healing abilities. Using them in conjunction with all the melee and long-range attacks help turn Revenge of the Fallen into much more than your basic button-mashing action game. The campaign mode also includes a pretty expansive upgrade system to make sure the robots reach their all-powerful potential as the game progresses. Presentation wise the game reached an all-new level of geek factor by bringing the entire Transformer’s universe into the virtual space, complete with tech-infused base of operations. This high amount of design effort was also rolled into the sound experience, resulting in a game that all audiophiles can be happy with.

There is a multiplayer aspect to the game that will help add huge amounts of replay-factor and keep the game fresh for months after this week’s release. We got to play a couple matches and each one was lag-free with tons of robot exploding fun. The mix of driving, shooting, and strategy create a multiplayer environment that is both competitive (on a team level) and straight up enjoyable. There are a couple different modes across multiple locales from the single player and in the end we were very happy that the developers decided to focus on the online mode and create something that is worthy of the Transformers name. Revenge of the Fallen won’t be blowing you out of the water with its graphical prowess but the robot models are very detailed and most of the environments are fairly destructible. The lighting and explosion effects are top notch though, as are each and every one of the weapon discharges.

When a developer is creating a movie game they are always fighting against the grain, trying to prove to the gaming public that not every game based off a film has to suck. While the first Transformers game was just average, Revenge of the Fallen improves a good bit and becomes one of those games well worth the purchase price. Not only is the duel-sided single-player campaign features plenty to do, the multiplayer online mode adds hours of fun time for fans and newbies alike. If you are one of those people that will be standing in line tonight to see the midnight premiere of the Transformers sequel this game is a no-brainer purchase, for those gamers looking for an over-the-top action game Revenge of the Fallen should not be overlooked. At this pace we can’t wait to see what Activision will bring to the table with the next Transformers video game, look for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – The Game on store-shelves this week. This game is more than meets the eye!
