German Ratings Board: Gears of War Kaputby Nelson Rodriguez
Digital Battle is reporting that German USK, the organization that sets video game ratings, has refused to give Gears of War a rating. For German gamers, that is not Gut.
It is unclear whether or not the ratings board will ban the game, making it illegal to sell, but denying it a rating will effectively kill Epic's chances of getting this into the average German home. You might say it kills it with a chainsaw.
German censors are notoriously touchy about extreme violence in games, and gave Dead Rising a similarly tough time for how cruelly it treated the undead. You could call the German ratings board fascists... but that's not the kind of name-calling they take lightly.
Germans who want to get their hands on this game will likely have to import it from nearby countries. When the game launches in Europe you could find a battalion of German gamers invading France or Belgium.
