Bioshock 2 - First Look Preview

    by Chris McGuire

The long awaited sequel to 2K games hugely popular first person action adventure Bioshock 2 is set to take players back to rapture in the safety of a steel deep sea diving suit on a drill gun. Bioshock one was a massive success that enthralled players with its immersive story line and imaginative take on the first person adventure genre of games, with this creating an army of loyal fans who pressed for a sequel. This army will no doubt be delighted with the announcement that Bioshock 2 will be coming before Christmas, along with the extremely enticing trailer 2K games released that raised many questions as to the plot of the sequel. The anticipated game takes place a decade after the events of Bioshock where players will return to the chaos that they left ten years ago but this time they will return in the role of a Big Daddy, Players will play as a Big Daddy but not the Big Daddy we all remember players inhabit the suit of a specialised specimen of the Big Daddy, which has many enhanced abilities to the older versions.

Players will be armed with the familiar drill gun and Plasmids of which will be able to be dual wielded making that prominent bulbous figure of the Big Daddy much more intimidating. Fans of the first wil remember their conscience being examined by the choice to harvest or save little sisters and this will continue into Sea of Dreams with an added option to adopt the little sisters which will mean players have the duty of protecting their little friends as well as themselves. As a result of your 2-ton diving suit players will also be able to take part in some deep-sea exploration where players can find plasmid enhancers and other goodies around the world of rapture. With such an epic story being the backbone to Bioshock fans of the series will be naturally tentative to how the saga continues. Ten years later rapture is in a terrible state only the strongest splicer’s have survived the events of a decade ago meaning the enemies you face this time around are much more challenging. With Rapture without a leader a highly skilled Big Sister has self appointed herself as ruler of Rapture acquiring amazing telekinetic skills, strength and speed no one can argue.

The back story behind the Big Sister is that ten years ago Tennebaum and her school of little sisters surface and they returned to normal lives except one little sister who couldn’t get Rapture out of her head she couldn’t fit in to the real world and lusted for Rapture, In the 60’s the girl returns to rapture to find it demolished and devoured by the sea she doesn’t like what she has seen and it continues from there. With no sequel implied at the end of Bioshock it was important that the story would not only be believable but also be as robust as the previous and the details released to date should settle some pre release nerves for fans. Bioshock received much criticism due to its lack of a multiplayer mode and 2K have acted on this by implementing a multiplayer mode for the newest instalment. There hasn’t been much released about the multiplayer to date but what we do know is that players will consume the bodies of plasmid lab rats and battle it out online using various different plasmids and weapons familiar from the single player campaign.

The game also implements a Call of Duty esque experience system where players pick up experience by their actions while playing online matches. Advancement through ranks will allow players to unlock new plasmids to use similar to perks in the call of duty experience which adds more incentive to keep plugging away with the online modes. These announcements are important as it shows that 2K has put thought and effort into the multiplayer mode and are not just adding multiplayer for the sake of it which would be a shame. Bioshock 2 as a single player game looks set to take over as the Big Daddy of the series though many will be worried as to how the multiplayer pans out a strong multiplayer mode should secure this sequel as one of the most impressive titles coming this year. Players can expect to dive back into rapture this Fall, 2009. Stay tuned for more on Bioshock 2, right here at PlanetXbox360.com, as the release date approaches.
