nejdetucan:
I find it interesting that your critisisms of this article are based not on the content but on the style of writing and on where it was published. If it truly is such a "miserable attempt" you should be able to point to specific sections or ideas that you believe are wrong. I have nothing against a good debate, and I acknowledge that many people probably disagree with what this author is saying. Notice the difference--they disagree with what the author says, and would hopefully be able to logically support their own opinions. It is the difference between a true debate with multiple reasonably supported opinions and what you are doing...the "straw-man" approach; that is, attacking the speaker rather than the subject. I would love you hear your opinions on the topic. It sounds like you might believe that one of the other consoles is better than the 360. Why is that? What do you disagree with in the article? What in it seems biased? I am truly interested. |

the article is a good attempt at avoiding biased thought but its a miserable attempt. You are part of 360 affiliated website, you are writing an article about the 360, obviously you won't bash the 360 on a 360 review site, and look at the whole article, it has "I" everywhere, I,I,I,I,I. seriously take some grammar lessons man- when "I" is used in an article or any piece of writing it completely makes the article subjective to your terms. As ludwig von wittengstein put it- “One of the most misleading representational techniques in our language is the use of the word 'I.'” |

just want to reply to the statement that spartan117458 made about the PS3's HDD being internal and non upgradable, the PS3 has a removable 60GB HDD, u can put it in and take it out similer to how the PS2's modem was inserted (on the back) therefor allowing u to upgrade with a larger HDD if one ever comes out, also even if sony doesn't come out with a larger PS3 HDD the system is capable of using any 2.5" HDD meaning technically (although not really practical) u could put in a 500GB computer HDD or any other size. |

First, I'd just like to tip my cap to Eric Bush for writing such a good article. In my opinion, it was as fair and unbiased an article as you can get. RazrV3, just because someone voices an opinion different from yours does not make them automatically biased, stupid, whatever. Seriously. I really agree that the way to choose the console is by what games you want to play. i won't pretend to know which console will end up having the "best" 'graphics or the "best" performance. It very well might be the PS3. For me, however, the xbox 360 is the console on my shelf. Why? Because of some of the games coming out for it that I have to have (Fable 2, Mass Effect, Halo 3, etc.). I don't care if the xbox 360 ends up being slightly outperformed on graphics. Have you seen the screen shots for some of the 360's games, like mass effect? they look incredible, and are next-generation enough for me. so maybe in the future there will be ps3 games that look better. So what? I'd rather play a game I really want to play with a slightly less sophisticated shading system or whatever than a game i don't care about. So look at the games. Like this wise author said, look at the exclusive titles and decide which excite you the most. |

RazrV3 if you relay can't tell the difference between Gears of War and Sony's First gen titles your Wack even the sony fan are giving Gears respect.
I cant believe you think Ps3 will last more than 4.5 years cos the tech / game market changes faster than any other market , trust me in 2 years the ps3 will be nothing fantastic. Intel & AMD/ ATI are will make the 360 and ps3 look and baby's compared t the hardware they will be releasing for Vista & DX 10

Here is my complaint about the PS3, since you didn't ask. It is coming out a year later and is no more powerful than the 360 yet cost $200 more. The original xbox had 3 times the processor speed of the PS2 and cost the same. High def DVD I'm guessing is pointless at this point no matter which format you choose. I'm guessing both will fail since consumers are not exactly scooping them off the shelves. Technology changes way too fast for devices to become successful over a period of years. It is either instantly (Ipod) or not at all (UMD). I can just picture people buying PS3 and BLU RAY disc and still having a standard def TV and claiming "it was worth it because they can really see a difference." I would be much more interested in the PS3 if it dump the Blu Ray and high price tag, and that's coming from a guy with an HDTV. I don't like having new tech forced upon me for more money if I am not interested in it. |

Good points, Nelson. On the bright side, however, with MS really gaining ground on Sony this round, I believe most 3rd party games will be multi-platform. Therefore, there won't be as much of a reason to buy more than one console. Sure, there are definately a decent amount of exclusives for each console, and this backs your argument. But besides the fact that I'm not a fan of Sony products, a good reason to jump on the 360 bandwagon, if you only want one console, is that Microsoft has WAY more money than Sony. I know you seem to not like the idea of 'exclusives', but since they are here to stay, I believe in the long run the 360 will have more of them.
The 360 will have a larger market share for at least a year or two and in the end, both consoles will have a similar stake in the market. This, in theory, would equate to a similar amount of exclusives. However, MS just has more dollars to gobble them up. Plus, I like LIVE and it's going to take Sony awhile to catch up in that area. |

Lots of great points here, all around. The PS3 will likely be a good console in its own right. Unfortunately, I don't think console wars are really good for customers, because the fight is over proprietary formats and not just extra features. I think game innovation can come from publishers competing, but with closed loop formats, it is like having to buy one car to drive to Miami, but a different car to drive to New York. (think Halo-town and Resistance-town).
In an open system, where there is just one console standard, you would see competition that helps consumers, because it would be about additional items that each consumer can pick from (quiet fan, bigger harddrive, etc.) PC gaming accomplishes this, in that you can play pretty much all of the same games on PCs made by many different manufacturers. So, you can pick a PC based on your own tastes, and not just a bet on one format or the desire to play a handful of exclusive games.
I don't enjoy PC gaming, because I think consoles are easy and no-fuss. I just wish we were having a game war between companies competing to make the next best game, rather than a console war that exclude buyers from certain titles unless they buy all the formats.
I wouldn't want to buy 3 cars to go to three different cities, and then only be able to buy Sony tires and Sony gas when driving one of the cars and Nintendo tires and gas when driving the other. The same can be said of TVs. If the TV you bought restricted the channels you could watch, it wouldn't really be good for consumers. The console war forces us to buy the equivalent of one TV for HBO, another for NBC and a different one for MTV. Metaphorically speaking.
I'm just talking pie-in-the-sky, because the console war isn't going away. But, if we argue that the PS3 and the 360 are roughly similar, buying both isn't really a good result of the war. Who needs two similar consoles to play similar exclusive games? I'm attracted to owning them all, cause I'm a junkie, but in my sober moments I just wouldn't say it's a consumer friendly situation. |

Splenius, MS has said they will not make any games that need the HD DVD drive because they do not want to force people into buying something that 200 dollars just to play a game. So what if the game is 20 gigs in size, with the better compression of the dvd9's it would fit on 2 disks at a lower total cost do to the lower cost of the dvd9 to the blue-ray. Remember size has nothing to do with the quality of the game itsself. In the end, the 360 will be slightly behind on the storage area untill the developers get the 1 disk thing out of thier heads. |

Good article.
I like games - pc, playstation, xbox whatever. I don't worship one over the other.
The playstation 3 is supposedly very quiet (fan and operating noise). I believe this gives it an asthetic advantage over the Xbox360 regardless of its size. The dvd spinning and fan noise from the Xbox360 is seriously bad.
The Xbox360 looks like it'll be the better controller but motion sensing would be nice. Maybe microsoft will release a new controller with this capability.
As for graphics and gaming perfomance, both consoles will obviously have the same capability.
Eric Bush is wrong to assume that the software companies wouldn't make use of the new Blue Ray format. (Resistance Fall of Man is over 20 gigabites). This will allow a dramatic increase in information and detail to PS3's games within the next generation.
Microsoft has said that they plan on releasing games in the HD DVD format. Who knows when Microsoft will make use of it... maybe for Halo 3?
This game will be so polished and so amazing...
I was planning on getting a PS3 as close to lauch but now I will wait. I want to see if Microsoft can keep me happy with what they have first; - add a web browser to the 360! |

RazrMACH3, this is getting pathetic....get a life man...stop dissing us....don't get sour like that just because you spent the last 12 months waiting for your PS3 and had nothing good to play for that period....the wait is over for you your PS3 is around the corner, you'll finally spend your hard earned $$$ and gets new games to sink your teeth in....unlike some of us, who enjoyed a great year of gaming, and will ALSO get a PS3 WHEN there will be as least 2 or 3 games of interest that we can't get on the 360...must be the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that get u down, hehe......BTW do you have one preordered???, could sell u mine on ebay if u want...don't get mad cauz u have to play scarface on a 4:3 tv when we get to play saints row in hi-def brother...i'll be playing dead rising on nov 17 and u , you'll be playing.....????, why don't u tell us oh lucky boy, why don't u tell us what you'll be playing on nov 17, hahaha |

Well.... Their is no 100 gig HD at this time from what MS has said, but the fact the HD is external is a plus, and that in the future their would be a better HD avalible. I, at some point want to buy a PS3 (not till the price falls though) and want to know how Sony has fixed their overheating problem we all know is there. My 360 has overheated before, and they say the PS3 make more heat makes me wonder how reliable its going to be. Nothing pisses you more then loosing an unsaved game. |

I have heard to damn much of the "fit it all on one disk" junk lately. If the Sony zombies will remember, many great games came on the PS1 on Multi disk. Has everyone become so lazy that they cannot get up and change a disk.
As for 360 getting stomped, well that will not happen. Both systems are as good as the next. This is good, because the more they fight it out the better the games will get. Remember, without Sony and MS fighting for position, their is no resone for the games to advance as fast as they are. |

ahhh razorv3, the pimplyfaced prepubescent whos mad because his sister took his barbies.. are u still ranting on your "sony is god" motife?
i wish fanboys would all just start choking on something... we call reality..
the ease and upgradeablility of the 360 is what will help make it a king in the market for time to come. as tech advances, all microsoft has to do is add a new upgraded device. That will keep our 360 from getting all moldy n old. Im not sure, but can they PS3 do that? If it cant, it may fall by the wayside as tech advances.
Of course ps3 games look like gen2 xb360 games. Its the same developers running the same developement kits (most games are run on kits like the unreal3 engines), with more time to work on it. Most of the original lineup of the 360 was based on alpha kits that only ran at 25% of the 360's capacity. So if launch games like Call of Duty2 were only at 25%, my oh my what the world will see come out of that machine. PS3 developers have had alot more time to work on the games for launch day, than 360 developers did.
The systems though will run very similar, no matter which side the fanboys are on. The games in the end will look about the same on both consoles. Especially since most are going to be cross-platformed ports!!
Fanboys.. go stab urself, and take an educated looksie outside.. theres a whole world outside of Playstation magazine! |

My main concern with Sony at this point is how they always over promise and under-deliver. I bought a PSP because I was told it was going to have all this great video content for sale online. I had visions of Lost episodes and Battlestar Galactica, but instead I see Apple Video iPod's getting things like that (wasted on that tiny screen no less). They did give an Ok browser, but it's only ok and it gives an "out of memory" error on about 25% of all web pages I try to go to. And the kicker is that Sony disables high-resolution video to avoid pirates cutting into their UMD market, so we can't even play video that the hardware is capable of because of Sony's paranoia (even if it IS justified).
My point is that Sony is not a very consumer-friendly company. The PS3 probably would only have online to update their firmware to keep a step ahead of pirates if Sony had their way. They give nothing away for free (unless it costs them nothing) and believe me, once they start tallying up the infrastructure costs they're going to have maintaining a network with 10 million users hitting it all the time, this "online for free" policy is going to end. They won't tell you now, they'll wait until you've gotten hooked. Not that I wouldn't do the same thing, it's going to make them a lot of money. Just don't kid yourself for a second thinking that Sony's your buddy here. They're scared to death of MS (rightly so) especially since they're getting their rear ends handed to them by their competitors in TVs (Samsung), Music (Apple and Napster), Computers (Dell, HP) and the list goes on. Aside from their movies Sony doesn't really have any reliable source of income other than Playstation games. They're afraid to lose that and they'll say or do anything at this point to guarantee an income there. Just don't be surprised to find out after you buy a PS3 that it comes with a free Sony hand in your pocket for as long as you own the system.
Remember - both competitors are losing approximately $300 per console out the door. That's an investment they're reasonably sure they're going to somehow get back out of each user over the next few years. |

After reading RazorV3's post, I just had to register to give a comment. Are you alright son, sounds like you need a hug, Why don't you go and get a job or if you have one, a better job so you can afford to buy all the consoles that are to be released and once you have experienced what they have to offer, give an educated and balanced opinion. I have owned every console released in the western hemisphere since 1982 and am drooling over the vision that i will have a PS3 in the new year, I will finally be able to compare it with my xbox 360. Personally, I am glad Fony have screwed up this time because it now gives the market some competition and we will all win as end user gamers. Oh yeah, get the quotes right next time. |

great article matt. i agree. all this arguing is pointless... fighting over consoles is like fighting over what’s the best type of vehicle, a motorbike or a car. Some people love the bikes and some people love their cars. both motions have there drawbacks and there strong points. Whether its gas mileage, number of people it can transport or handling.
Each console has something that the other consol is missing out on. Even if its my the slightest or margins. Whether it would be online community, disk space. Or upgradeability.
