Rainbow Six Vegas Demo Now Americanizedby Nelson Rodriguez
Residents of the Americas, namely Canada, the United States and Mexico, finally have access to a Rainbow Six Vegas demo on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The demo is available now and shows off an introductory level, very much like the G.R.A.W. demo from ages past.
I've spent quite a bit of time with this demo and I am thoroughly impressed by the graphics and the way it throws you into the action. You start off on a helicopter above Las Vegas as you receive a briefing of the situation on the ground. Once the chopper lands, you will get to try out everything that Rainbow Six is known for: modern weapons, squad commands, and fancy gadgets like fiber-optic cams and night vision goggles.
One odd quirk for this version of Rainbow Six is that switching from third person to first person view creates an unnatural jump between perspectives, rather than a smooth transition. It can be unsettling until you get used to it. Another obvious, but effective, visual trick is that injuries to your character appear as screen darkening and blurring. There is no health meter on screen in the demo. You know you are injured because you start to lose focus, almost like the faint feeling you get when you stand on line all night to get a PS3 and are denied when the store opens.
The demo features heavy use of the night vision goggles, which I tend to get tired of, but it works pretty well in this case. I was not impressed by the Rainbow Six Vegas trailer when it came out weeks ago, but the demo reverses my perspective completely. How has your time with the demo been?
