Don't Forget About Call of Duty 3

by Nelson Rodriguez

There is a gritty shooter that has been highly anticipated for quite some time, and has built a bit of a buzz, and is finally hitting stores this week.  No, not that one!

I nearly shed a tear when the Call of Duty 3 press release came across my screen this morning.  I realize how callous we have all become.  The press release doe not address anything we all don't already know about the game, but the publisher wants to make sure they don't get buried under a pile of Gears.  I scanned across the last few days of headlines on our site and found that we have not covered a Call of Duty 3 news item since October.

At 9:30 am on CoD3's launch day, a quick review of the most popular game blogs, from Major Nelson to Joystiq to Kotaku finds not one single shred of Call of Duty 3 coverage on the front page.  Of course, blogs are not the only source of information in the world, but they are usually a sign of what is being discussed by their readers.  This game is the sequel to the most popular game still played on the Xbox 360 since it launched, and it has arrived in stores today, though you almost wouldn't know it.

What happened?  So many questions must be asked, and I hope you will answer.

Should Activision have chosen a different launch day for this game?  Are people that tired of World War II?  Do you have $120 to spend on games today?  Will it be Gears or CoD3 or both?

I'll be getting both, for sure, but there really is no comparison. Gears is above and beyond anything out now and most likely anything coming out in the near future. If you have any liking at all for shooters, you would be doing yourself a disservice by not getting Gears. IMO, it has lived up to its hype and then some. It's been since Half Life 2 and Halo before it, that I've been so floored by a shooter. Don't get me wrong, I love the COD series and will get COD3 as well. I won't be playing anything else, however, until I've worn out my Gears disc.

On Wednesday, I went to Best Buy to purchase both Gears of War and Call of Duty 3. Among the flood of people there, I was able to secure a copy of each game. I quickly paid for the games, and I made my way for the exit. That is when I remembered the previous podcast that you guys did. I started to get paranoid. I thought for sure that Nelson was going to jump out of the shadows, and take my games. I could hear footsteps behind me but I dared not to turn around. As I made my way to my car, I continued to hear footsteps, they were getting closer, and this time someone shouted my name, “Hey Marc!!! Wait Up!!!” I didn’t recognize the voice, I quickened my pace, and I got inside my car and immediately locked the door. I again heard the voice, “Marc!!! Marc!!! I need to talk to you!!! It was accompanied by a rapid tapping on my car door. I thought that this is it, Nelson is going to take my games. As I held my breath and looked to see who was outside of my car, I saw that it was a Best Buy employee. “You’re Marc right?” he asked me. Relieved that it wasn’t Nelson, I said to him that my name is in fact Marc. He then pulled out of his pocket my Best Buy Card, and he proceeded to tell me that in the hurry to leave the store, I left my card at the register. Talk about being paranoid. Nelson, please announce that you are in fact not going to jack anyone. I can’t go to any store now without the fear that you could attack me. That being said, both games are amazing, and I’ll be looking for you and Natalie online.

In response to the dude that was going to pick his copy up at BestBuy, I hope you were had some luck with that. I preordered from BestBuy also and earlier tonight they told me they had received the game but wouldn't release them until tomorrow. They said they'd refund my $5 if I was able to get it elsewhere but Gamestop said the same thing and other stores said they weren't getting it 'til Thursday.

i just ordered gears today, so i'm definately getting that tomorrow, but as far as cod3 is concerned, i will get it as soon as i have the extra money for it. i figure that it is close enough to cod2 that it'll be good, but i can definately last without it for a while. i think that activision just picked a bad day to release it.

YOU GUYS ARE NUTS!!!! We have call of duty 2, we dont have gears. Call of duty 3 can wait for a few weeks, months, etc. GOW is a brand new game. CoD3 is the same game as 2! I am not saying CoD3 isnt amazing, i'm just saying GoW is better. I will be getting CoD3 for Christmas.

I'm getting COD3 later today at Best Buy, not really sure why there is so much hype on GOW though.

I never get tired of WW2 genre games. Sure, the games kinda blend together, but it was a good war. Besides, Don Malarkey of the 101st Airborne Division lives down the street. And he tells me about his war stories, and as lame as this may sound, these game help me connect with him more. My grandpa served as a gunner on the USS South Dakota, so I look forward to the Battlestations: Midway game as well.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm already trading in about ten original xbox games a couple of DVD's and a little hard earned cash at my local EB games store to get GoW! So when it comes to my little precious gaming funds... Hands down, Gears of War, no questions asked!
