Hackers have already found a way to get the recently released Xbox 360 HD DVD player to work with Windows XP.
Someone by the name of "BluePrint" released drivers for the Toshiba manufactured drive that will enable Windows XP to recognize it as a valid HD DVD drive (apparently the HD DVD player is recognized in Windows Vista without the need to install the Blueprint drivers).
From there the people at
UNEASYsilence took over and tried to play an actual HD DVD movie on their PC using WinDVD 8, and apart from some stuttering (you need a very powerful PC to play HD DVD movies), it ran fine. They then tried to see if there was any way to connect the drive to the PC without using USB (i.e. via direct connection), but alas there was not.
It has also been reported that Mac users will find the drive instantly recognized when they connect it via USB, however there is no MacOS HD DVD movie player software available yet.
