Three GameStop stores in Jersey City, N.J. put Assassin's Creed II and Left 4 Dead 2 on sale today, calling in customers to pick up their pre-orders and pay for their games. Clerks at the store we called said corporate authorized the jumping of the gun, once again the mega-store blame the slip-up on a single independent game-shop for breaking the release date first.
The stores involved were numbers 4627, 4260 and 6005 at the Hudson Mall and Newport Centre. In calls placed to the stores, sales associates said another store in the area had started selling Assassin's Creed II and Left 4 Dead 2 early; they sought permission to break street from their superiors in GameStop, and it was approved. The broken street date was only for Jersey City, they said. Calls to stores in Hoboken, Manhattan, and Clifton said Assassin's Creed II was not for sale until its Tuesday release date.
Last week, GameStop Corp. authorized it's stores in a much larger area of the country to break the street date and begin selling copies of Modern Warfare 2 days early. Independent game retailers that were selling advance copies were also blamed in that situation. Our crack team of investigators at PlanetXbox360.com have put in calls to spokesmen for both GameStop and Ubisoft; should they have any comment, it will be updated here.
