What We Can Learn From Halo: Reach Trailer

    by Andrew Galbraith

For those of you who were able to see what little footage was shown at Spike’s VGA show this past Saturday, you would have noticed the new in-game engine trailer from Halo: Reach, which is slated for release Fall 2010 essentially keeping all of us Halo fanboys in tight-knit stitches until at least the beta is available Spring next year. In the meantime, the trailer will have to do and while it isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, there are some definite indications that what we’re getting here is something new and exciting. If you haven't already seen the trailer in complete form make sure to watch it, by clicking here, before reading the rest of this article. Thus, without further delay, I present the conclusion of a dissertation via screenshots of the latest Halo: Reach trailer.

Jorg-052 seems, at first glance, to be sporting a version of MJONIR Mark VI armor, however, that would be far too soon for it to be deployed to Spartans as Master Chief doesn’t receive it until Halo 2. This leads me to believe that this may be a prototype version of it or even a set of armor that predates the Mark V armor worn by the Chief in Halo: Combat Evolved. On the other hand, it could potentially be a different version altogether as Jorg is the Squad’s heavy weapon operative, thus this may be new armor gamers haven’t seen before.

Carter-259 is the Spartan Commander seemingly in charge of the Squad. While it isn’t unusual for Spartans to take UNSC Navy ranks as they are part of NavSpecWep (Navy Special Weapons), these are the first time Spartans have been referred to by officer ranks.

Boarding one of the vehicles, the Commander tells the Lieutenant that he knows everything about him and tells him to leave that “lone wolf” stuff behind. This further reinforces the suspicion that what gamers will be getting next fall when Halo: Reach releases to the gaming community will be a more squad-oriented combat experience, as opposed to the single player mayhem we’ve come to expect from Bungie and Halo as a whole.

As the vehicles become airborne, it can be heard that “Winter Contingency” has been declared by the UNSC since the Covenant have penetrated Reach’s outer defenses and the planet stands to fall to the enemy. In the top of the image, the silhouette of a Covenant Carrier can be clearly seen as it fires the first salvos against the surface of the planet.

I just wanted to attach this final image on to the end of my dissertation as the new engine makes Elites look pretty formidable. Almost as intimidating as the first time I saw them in Combat Evolved. But there you have it, the most notable frames of the Halo: Reach trailer as shown at Spike’s VGA show last Saturday. I think this is going to be decidedly one of the biggest titles to arrive in the hands of gamers for 2010. Personally, I can’t wait to see what Bungie does differently and if they bring the same care they’ve brought to the design of the Halo series so far, then I think next Fall will be an amazing time for gamers. Stay tuned to PlanetXbox360.com for all the updated information on Halo: Reach as it comes in, have a great Holiday season.
