Following up from
earlier reports that Microsoft could be looking at banning fake Xbox Live accounts (the ones you create in another region to download content only available there), we have confirmation that they could just be blocking downloads on them.
The fake or "dummy" accounts as they are sometimes known, are created by people, usually outside of the United States, so that they can access and download content on the Xbox Live Marketplace that is available only to people in the US. In the past this included game trailers and demos etc. However, now with the introduction of downloadable TV shows and movies over Xbox Live, it looks like Microsoft will be stepping up the regional protection features on the Live Marketplace.
Chris Paladino, part of Microsoft's marketing team, posted the following on the
NeoGAF forums:
Details aren't all in yet - BUT, I do know for a fact that we are NOT banning the accounts. We are blocking downloads in cases where gold accounts are being used to gain US content in foreign marketplaces.I think (my opinion) that it is a legal issue - still waiting to hear back the official word.
