Considering I am an openly Xbox 360 fanboy it’s hard to admit that one of my most anticipated games of 2010 comes from a studio that develops exclusively for Sony’s Playstation 3, Qunatic Dream. Their first next-gen game goes by the name Heavy Rain, and it hits stores early next week. The reason it caught my attention to such a higher degree than the Call of Dutys and Halos of the world is because it’s completely different than anything available on the Xbox 360 these days (that will change once Alan Wake releases later this year). Every now and then a game comes along that creates an emotional experience in me that forces me to let people know about it, this experience happened multiple times as I played the near-perfect Heavy Rain. There were moments throughout my 10+ hour first playthrough that shocked me, scared me, and reached down into the depths of my soul and touched me emotionally. Heavy Rain was literally one of the most enjoyable and entertaining video games I have ever played, and that’s hard for me to say considering it’s console of choice. Video games these days have a tendency to be so unrealistic that only a small group of players have any chance at connecting with what is unfolding on screen. Mass Effect 2 from BioWare took this concept to a whole new level, and with it scoring the very first perfect 10 that PlanetXbox360 has ever awarded. Still games like ME2 are far and few between, and it just happens that the latest unique title to be released is a Playstation 3 exclusive. The tagline: "How Far Are You Willing to Go to Save Someone You Love" is the perfect description of the difficult choices you as the player have to make in Heavy Rain. I’m writing this article not to try to get Xbox 360 owners to sell off all their games and hardware to run out and snatch up a PS3; I just want to introduce you all to a game that should not be overlooked and if there is any reason out there to own both an Xbox 360 and a Playstation 3 Heavy Rain is it. From the moment I booted up the adventure title I knew that Quantic Dream had succeeded on everything they have been touting the game to be, over the last couple years. The presentation is beautiful and easily up there with any other big-time gaming franchise that you can think of in this generation. The gameplay is instantly comparable to one of my favorite adventure games of all-time: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 (original Xbox). It was a sad day when the guys behind those games revealed they would be stopping development and ironically it’s taken nearly ten years for something comparable to hit store shelves. Let me continue by saying that if you’re looking for the latest Gears of War or Uncharted game this is not it, you will spend a lot of time playing with your virtual family, shaving your virtual face, and even using the bathroom.
