Mankind has had a fascination with beings from beyond the stars ever since someone first realized that it was possible. They make feature appearances in our television shows, books, films, and even our music. Sometimes they’re benevolent creatures that wish to learn from each other’s culture and murderous experiences. Other times they’re rampant predators with no goal more complex than using us as incubators for their young. Whether they’re coincidentally humanoid or unbelievably hideous, they still captivate our imaginations. With the recent release of Aliens vs. Predator on the Xbox 360 we thought it would be a perfect time to list the top 10 virtual aliens, which show up in video games throughout this generation.
10. Akrid: In the frosty environs of Capcom’s Lost Planet games not only do you have to worry about bone-chilling temperatures and vicious ice pirates, but you’ve got to contend with these bizarre creatures. Despite a vastly differing array of sizes and physical features they all seem relatively happy with one another and very miffed with you. There’s never any attempt at reconciling this unusual fact, one would think that the creatures would be far more prone to preying on one another given the limited resources of the frozen world, but they’re still cool nonetheless and often fun to fight.

9. Asari: Some of the earliest aliens that the general public was introduced to were buxom, polychromatic lasses that William Shatner wooed in his Captain Kirk guise. Amidst all the serious plot and hard science-fiction there was an entire race that comes across as a male fantasy wrapped in lurid blue flesh. The science behind their reproduction is fairly solid. Recently certain scientists discovered a colony of female ants that reproduce entirely by cloning, laying eggs that are copies of themselves. Yet why would an alien race be so similar in physical stature to human females? The idea that these creatures are universally appealing is also fairly illogical, given that even within the human race conceptions of beauty vary by culture.
8. The Flood: Parasitic aliens aren’t exactly anything new, but the flood were a fun one to fight. They also added an entirely new level to Halo; different tactics and weapons were necessary when fighting them. The way they progressed in terms of difficulty was enjoyable. Whereas some games might just throw them at you in greater and greater number as levels go on, but the folks at Bungie integrated the climbing challenge in a logically consistent manner. As the game progresses and the Flood gain more and more beings under their sway they begin to increase in intelligence and complexity, utilizing weapons, shields and vehicles. The revelation of the ‘gravemind’, the sort of central being directing the efforts of the flood might have been much cooler had the creature not born such a strong resemblance to the plant-creature from Little Shop of Horrors.
