What do you get when you combine Need For Speed’s Racing, Mario Kart’s power-ups, and stylized neon graphics? Bizarre Creations’ upcoming title, Blur, has recently become the first video game I think of. Blur features arcade style racing, social network integration, and the ultimate driving adventure. I had the opportunity to play the multiplayer beta of Activision’s latest project to experience the intensity head-on. At first glace, the look of this game is incredibly captivating. In accordance with the title, the graphical motif of Blur will indulge your eyes with its swift, smooth, too-fast-to-focus look. Although this game is bursting with beauty, it also has brawn. Powerful, unpredictable gameplay encouraged me to say, “Just one more race” over and over again. The impulsive, yet controlled use of many power-ups ranging from speed boosts to shield bubbles to homing fireballs leads to a gaming venture that can potentially lead to distinctively different outcomes every competition.

The multiplayer portion of Blur (this beta was MP only) can hold up to twenty players per race (via Xbox LIVE and PSN). Being that each race can feature such a large amount of competitors, cars crashing, flipping and being electrocuted can and likely will be happening all around you at once. Such fast-paced action is just what the racing genre of video games needs and Blur brings it with brute force. The energy of this game is second-to-none, but the tracks are more than a bit predictable. The full game will most likely highlight more tracks than the beta provided us with. Hopefully some of the complete title’s tracks will be as extreme as the already remarkable approach to racing that the Blur beta brings. Along with the limited amount of tracks, (which is expected in a beta version), the game can get slightly repetitive. I believe, however, with a wider array of missions, goals and overall play, there will be less uniformity altogether.

This game may have a few cons, but overall from what I experienced in the beta program I think Blur shows promise and lots of it. I have never been much of a fan of racing video games, but I feel Blur may be my first exception. To make certain you like this game, I would suggest renting it first and buying it later. This will give you the opportunity to test out all the racing goodness this game brings. Blur, coming out for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, is set to put you in the driver’s seat May 25th of this year. This distinctive racing game shows tremendous capabilities. Try out this game for yourself during the beta period (by clicking here) and see if you enjoy the ride as much as I did.
