Opinion: Gaming HDMI - Why Now?

by Joel Clausen

This is an opinion editorial

Rumors have been abound of late concerning the possible release of a revamped and updated Xbox 360. This new 360 would include a larger, more generous hard drive (120 GB) as well as HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) support. Could it possibly be true? Joystiq has reported Microsoft's GM of their game developer group, Chris Satchell, admitting that they have been “experimenting” with HDMI enabled 360’s. Satchell also went on to say it’s “not really a product that we're thinking about announcing". Experimentation does not necessarily mean a confirmation of release but I doubt Microsoft would invest the time and resources in “experimenting” if they were not planning to make it official in the future, especially considering that Sony is right behind them. In all probability, Microsoft would not confirm a hardware upgrade or price listing prior to production but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar model soon. This all sounds great does it not? Well, many have become upset over the rumored updated 360 and some for legitimate reasons.

Many have interpreted the rumors concerning the new Xbox 360 as proof Microsoft released an incomplete, inefficient console. Why should someone buy another 360 when they purchased their current system less than a year ago? Well, they shouldn’t, but not because Microsoft produced an inferior system.

Opinion: Gaming HDMI - Why Now?

For those up in arms over these latest revelations you may now drop a few Quaaludes and listen to the latest Enya CD. The main addition to the revised 360 would be the new HDMI output port. The reasoning behind it is something that pertains more to the optional HD-DVD drive than anything gaming related. One can accurately assume that when the larger HDD has been released it will pre-date any new 360 hardware upgrade and be available as an add-on. The larger drive has come more by way of necessity rather than competition. With more than 100 million standard and HD media downloads via Xbox Live, the need for more disk space was apparent. MS has been aware of such an issue and will in all likelihood produce larger GB models. A larger HDD has not been officially announced but with Microsoft placing so much emphasis on media content via Live, the larger drive has become somewhat expected. The inclusion of HDMI is another story altogether. It remains to be seen how MS might go about solving this problem. Will they provide a hardware update whereby you ship your current console to Microsoft in exchange for a revised version while paying an established fee? Will it only be available for full retail purchase? Who is to know for sure with Microsoft declining to speculate on any release date or price for the new system? With that said, the question now becomes whether HDMI is required or is it even relevant?

The first thing we need in asking ask whether or not HDMI for the 360 is relevant is the total number of HDTV owners. Not every HD television comes with HDMI output. Today, more HD television manufactures are including HMDI output in anticipation of it becoming the new status quo, although years prior they were only available on higher end models. For arguments sake, we will assume all HDTV owners have HDMI support (a stretch by any measure). Leichtman Research has shown that one of every six United States households owns an HDTV. At first glance this appears to be a large number with nearly 18.5 million households. However, approximately 92.1 million households still do not own an high definition capable television, a substantial discrepancy at best. The average household income for HDTV owners is $89,500, while the average median household income as of 2003 was 43,318. As shown, the majority of people do not have a HDTV but most surveys indicate a large percentage of non-HD owners intend to purchase one in the next 1-3 years. This should demonstrate the consumer base for any high definition technology at the moment is fairly small.

If they really wanted to make a differ. they would need to make the processor run cooler, a quiter drive(*maybe a built in hd dvd?) bigger H.D.D. and the hdmi output and maybe to be cool like the new ipods add the abilty to buy different color 360's for a custom look. but hey i'm no genius I just like those i deas

its all hippocratcy. Almost every console that has come out in the last 10-20 yrs, has also made an "updated version", the whole way back to the ATARI. Not one of them had a "buy back" policy. Its a load of crap, get over it. Your 360 is not inferior, and i have a 60inch 1080i set, and im not willing to shell out another 120 bux for a frikkin cable, much less 400 more for a new system, just so i can buy said cable, VGA and component looks tight, thats good enough. Everyone still comes over to my house to see the newest games in 1080 (read: GoW!!), and they look amazing. HDMI is not enough difference from that to justifiy the extra spending. If they just made a "vga to hdmi" adapter cable, it would be fine, but then would it really be any different?

I may not be an electronics wizard or a computer engineer, but if Microsoft is serious about going HDMI, wouldn’t it make more sense (and be cheaper in the long run) for them to take the existing A/V output and have it convert the 360’s information to HDMI for us super 50 inch HDTV owners who have HDMI ports as apposed to coming out with an entirely new 360 all together? I have a 360 and think it is the most kick ass piece of hard wear I own in my home. But if we are talking about basically just adding some more silicon to the current 360 to make it HDMI compatible, why can’t they add that extra silicon to a cable. (And yes, I realize this would make the existing cable for the 360 larger then it already is) This should appease the masses that already own 360 and don’t want to have to go thru the process of buying yet another 360. In know if the ability to make this cable is not possible, I am sure it will piss off a lot of existing 360 owners. In the end though I have to say, I agree with hrbib21 and salvia, Apple has become the King of the ‘latest version’ (Ipod; nano, shuffle, video, Iphone… etc… etc… etc.) Apple is making more money then god with each new Ipod they make and no one seems to care. When Apple comes out with their latest version, consumers either have an obsolete machine, they are forced to upgrade or they suck it up and enjoy what they have already. Apple is not going to supply anyone with their ‘newer version’ (read: ‘capitalism’ in wikipedia). Why can’t Microsoft have a piece of that pie?

Wow, know really knows what they're talking about huh? Hdmi IS a big improvement, for those of us with HDTVs over 50", mines 65". As far as less on the frame rate, which is better on a camera, 1/100ths or 1/1000? Faster actually is better. If your not conviced then stop by a high end A/V place and ask for a demo. As for me I put alot down on MS saying the 360 was High def. While 720 is twice as good as 480, 1080i or p is just that much better! On sets over 50" mind you. So now instead of the 1080 they promised, I have to settle on 720. In reality it was deceptive marketing, they should have called it 'Medium Def'!

"The point is that us consumers who have supported the launch of the Xbox360 have been given an inferior product. If this new version of the 360 is released Microsoft owes us some sort of compensation." Complete nonsense. How is it inferior? My 360 does exactly as it was described. Your definition of inferior seems to be "newer". Using your logic, I want my '05 Nissan Altima replaced with an '07. I'm screwed because "What happens when we want to sell our Nissan Altima/Xbox 360s on ebay"?

There is no reason for MS to have a "buy back" program of sorts. We were not sold an Inferior product. The component and vga cables are more than enough. If you really thing that the hdmi's .01% improvement over vga with a $110 cable upgrade is worth it go ahead. Most people do not have HDMI capability, MS made a console for the masses for the present, not for the few and 10 yrs from now when HDMI is commonplace. I do not want to pay the extra $$$ for HDMI. If i remember you cant do PiP w/ HDMI, which for me and my wife, is paramount so we dont fight over the tv :) If HDMI is so much better, and so important, why dont more PS3 games look better compared to their 360 counterparts???? Just give me a 100-200 gig HDD and ill be happy. oh yea, and more HDDVD movies for my player!!

i think that for the existing 10 million xbox 360 owners should at least get the 120 gb hard drive if this new xbox come out. i don't rely care for the hdmi

Personally, I think HDMI is useless, as "True HD" 1080p does not look as good as 1080i, which has been around a lot longer. This is especially noticable during periods of high action and movement (which happens to be most video games) because 1080p is constantly showing 30fps, meaning it lags more, whereas 1080i is smoother becuase it is only showing half the frames at one time. Also, component video is more reliable and is much cheaper than HDMI. The only reason Microsoft would include it would be because of Hollywood and their precious HDCP for HD DVD a, which is not all that great (neither is Blu-ray). The only way i would buy an upgrade w/ an HDMI port would be if it had other good features to justify it, such as a larger HDD.

Sony released the Slim version w/ increased memory and the world didn't collapse. Suck it up, buy the new drive if you want space. Buy the new box if you want the HDMI. Like Hrbib said, no one sent me a new color screen 80GB ipod when my 40GB 4G non color ipod was made obsolete.

It's a very tough call. I for one can't see them accepting consoles back (plus maybe some cash) in exchange for new ones with the HDMI port. What are they gonna do with millions of unwanted, non-HDMI consoles?

I agree with Splenius. What happens when we want to sell our Xbox 360s on ebay or something when the new xbox comes out, and nobody wants ours because they know it's older, and they know theres no HDMI port.

I don't understand someone complaining about this situation. We all bought the 360 knowing what it is that we were getting. There are no secrets here. If anyone had a problem with not having and HDMI port then they should've waited. I have an HDTV with two HDMI ports and I'm not complaining. How anyone can expect Micro$oft, or any other company for that matter, to somehow reimburse them because of a product upgrade is unbelievable. I sure didn't get an upgraded Nano when Apple came out with them this year.
