Xbox 360 Elite: Is the Backlash Justified?

by Joel Clausen

This is an opinion editorial

The official announcement of the Xbox 360 Elite [click here] has stirred up quite a controversy. Why? The reasons are beyond me, although it wasn’t as if we were all left in the dark about a possible updated 360. The Zephyr rumors of months prior were the first indication that Microsoft was plotting to produce an updated machine. The rumor mill came about full circle when a Microsoft spokesman admitted that they were indeed fiddling with the Xbox 360 in their highly classified, secret laboratory of innovation. It was said that although the idea was ongoing Microsoft denied they were planning on releasing such a console in the future. Months later, and after leaked photographs of the Elite surfaced, Microsoft announced the newest version of the 360 and shit has hit the proverbial fan. Everyone seems to have been taken aback and surprised, although anyone who follows the gaming industry knew a revamped 360 was on its way. Crying foul is the latest trend as everyone has jumped on the pissed off bandwagon. Well, for all those riding the carriage jump off and place yourself back into reality. If you were shocked Microsoft announced a new version of the 360 I would suggest you relocate the rock you have been living under and place it near an area with internet access or around those in the know.

The gaming industry exceeds 9 billion USD in revenue every year. That is a substantial sum of money for video games. In order for a business to take a larger piece of the 9 billion dollar pie they must compete, and compete to win. Sony has always boasted the fact HDMI and a larger hard drive are included in the PS3 out of the box (save the HDMI cable). The Sony mantra was “Get true 1080p resolution via HDMI on the PlayStation 3”. HDMI is great and yes, it may be the wave of the future as some in the industry have alluded to, but you can still receive 1080p on the current Xbox 360 you own via VGA. It is possible Microsoft may be anticipating other electronic products being produced either by them or that other companies will utilize HDMI technology exclusively. It is also possible they are only attempting to cover all their bases and take preemptive action before it becomes too late. To blame Microsoft for attempting to make an already outstanding gaming machine even better would be blatant fanboyism or habitual complaining.

For those who have HDMI enabled televisions I can see why you may have become slightly frustrated but as I have stated before if it’s only 1080p you are looking for (which only 1 game supports so far) VGA does the job just fine. For those such as myself who have an HDTV but lack any HDMI capability the Elite is nearly a non-issue. I am content with my 1080i as are  many other gamers I have spoken with.

The 120GB hard drive was implemented into the Elite as well as being sold separately, not out of any real current necessity but rather in preparation for IPTV. I do know a few who have maxed their hard drives out and have been forced to delete many items but the vast majority of 360 players have yet to exceed the current GB limit on their existing hard drive. In the future I am sure I will polish off my current hard drive and I’ll go scoop up the 120GB version but until then the 360 I have works great.

The black is cool, but white matches the Wii. Seeing I don not own a single screen with a HDMI input, the Elite is wasted on myself. Still, I think it is great that MS are listening and offering the choices people want/need. If I manage to make my current tele explode, I'll be grabbing a HD tele and an Elite to match. Until that day, my LCD monitor and sub-D cable are working just fine.

is there a difference between the elite and the 360 apart from being black and having a 120 gig hardrive

Jimbob what did the PS1 do for the original playstation? besides shrink it and take away the ability to link? And here's the age old argument again. I dont have a HDTV (yet). why spend money on a Ps3 for HD DVD's when i could save myself 2 hundred bux and get 360, then later (if i want to cause its my choice now)spend the extra money for the HD DVD player? So your not paying "extra" for what the PS3 has mandatory, with the PS3 your forced to pay "extra" up front.

I saw this blog, and I had to subscribe to better understand this issue. It appears to me (while reading what you wrote for the article) that the only actual difference between this "Elite" and regular 360's is more memory, yet you still have to pay extra for items which the PS3 has mandatory, such as the hd dvd player. I am confused why microsoft even came out with the Elite so soon if they can't update it more than what the PS1 did with the original playstation. the only difference is the color, which I fine strange because xbox has gone black to white and now black again shortly after the PS3 (which is also black) came out. Please tell me why microsoft even bothered with the new xbox.

AhAHAHAHA This is the best article I have read to date about the 360. Honestly in the beginning I was alittle upset because I would have to buy a new system for HDMI BUT, its true, unless you have a tv that supports 1080p then whats the point? If you just want it for the color I have some advice for you, GET A MOD CASE! You can get a black mod case w/ X shaped LED's for under $100 these days. Do the research! Yes I will buy the elite and enjoy the 1080p. I also like the prospect of HDMI because its fully digital and uncompressed video and audio in one simple cable. Simplicity is great... However, to date, the only game I have seen that supports 1080p is Lost Planet. Bottom line, the xbox 360 is an amazing machine that runs oober nice. Dont hate, its a great syste, if anything be happy that you can now do 1080p because there are ALOT of people who will buy your console for atleast $200. I already have a buyer for my core system w/ HDD for $250. Trade in some of my 16 games and I wont have a problem dishing out 100 to 200 for a new system w/ hdmi and a 120GB HDD... Its not that bad a deal when you really think about it!!!

Poophead - At the time of the 360's launch (and even now) what was the percentage of the market that owned 1080p TV's? 0.25%? 0.5%? For the tiniest sliver of the worldwide gaming market that now owns a 1080p HDTV that only accepts 1080p through HDMI, the Elite version is on the way. Sorry, but HD is not just 1080p (Seems like you got that line from Sony). It is not 'true HD', it's just another resolution of HD (albiet the best). Was it an oversight by MS to ignore 0.5% of the gaming world? Sure. Did they correct it? Yep. If you can afford a 1080p HDTV, then you can definately afford the $80 upgrade after you sell your premium on Ebay. Actually, throw in a couple games you don't play anymore and get $480 on Ebay for your premium, then you don't even have to come up with the $80.

Most people miss the point, and that is HDMI was out of the gate before the 360 was lanched by more than a year. With that alot of manufacturers impimented the HDMI in the HDTV sets. If you read any,ANY, audio/video mag they will tell you that 90% of all HDTV's only accept 1080p on the HDMI ONLY. My Toshiba is in that catagory. My complaint has always been that the 360 should have been HD to begin with!It should have had the HDMI already as an option! Instead they decieded to screw people like me who invested in believing that Microsoft knew what High Def was.

No, the backlash is not justified. The gameplay is the same on any of the three consoles. The online play, marketplace, achievements, game line-up, game performance, etc. etc. etc. are all the same. HDMI is only needed if the copywrite goes into affect for HD movie playback (although I think you can still watch downloaded HD movies fine). Gameplay on component or VGA looks just as good (although colors through VGA can be a bit washed for some TVs). The 120 gig HDD is nice, but any of the SKUs can be upgraded with this, although I think the $179 price point is way too high for the HDD. In fact, the only thing people should complain about is the price of the 120 gig HDD. No one is getting screwed, and I think much of this backlash is caused by Sony fanboys since you can really see them going nuts now on every cross-platform site. More so than usual, much more.

It's annoying, but unless they do something where the Elite system with HDMI can do something the current systems can't, it's not a big deal in my book. I can understand people wanting the HDMI version, or wanting there system to be black, but if it has no advantage over the current system other then HDMI, I don't see a problem.

If you like black that much, a can of black Krylon spray paint for plastic surfaces is much cheaper than running out and dropping close to $500 just for a black console.

I want the elite cuz its Black and looks like "the shit." I fancy black consoles. PS3 an exception because its a piece of inanimate shit.
