X-Men contained several unique features including the ability to hit fallen opponents to prevent them from getting back up (as first seen in the arcade game Crime Fighters by Konami (1989) and its sequels), as well as a character-specialized "mutant power," which could clear most of the screen of enemies (like the 'crowd control' attack in Final Fight achieved by hitting both the jump & attack buttons together) assigned to the third action button. Normally mutant powers took away 3 bars of health when used. Each player begins with two glowing orbs in their health bar which represent mutant power. When a player's health is low enough, these glowing orbs represent an opportunity to use the mutant power without health penalty. Additional orbs can be earned by defeating bosses or, as an extra option featured only in the six player version, by picking up special power capsules scattered throughout the levels. Depending on the machine, the maximum number of simultaneous players varies from two to six. The six-player version used a multiple wide screen set up, similar to The Ninja Warriors. The upcoming Xbox 360 and PS3 port will feature drop-in online multiplayer for up to six players, as well as custom matchups and adjustible difficulty.
